Stockholm Subway Art

March 6, 2024 - Present

The Stockholm metro system has been called “the world’s longest art gallery”, with a large majority of the 100 stations decorated with sculptures, rock formations, mosaics, paintings, installations, engravings, and reliefs by around 250 different artists. In this exhibit visitors to the Swedish Club could enjoy a virtual trip on the Stockholm Subway.

The Stockholm subway, known as tunnelbana in Swedish, opened in 1950 and was the first of its kind in the Nordic countries and is the only one in Sweden. The system consists of 100 stations and is spread over 7 lines that are categorized by colors.

Beginning in the 1950s the art in the Stockholm subway has evolved into one of the world’s longest art exhibitions. Its evolution from a mere transportation system to a vibrant art gallery reflects Stockholm’s dedication to creativity and innovation.
